CSR Instability in LCLS

In June 2001, elegant simulations of the LCLS showed a CSR-driven microbunching instability.
This instability appears not to be a simulation artifact.
This forced a redesign of the LCLS compressors.
Theoretical work by Schneidmiller et al. has confirmed the possibility of the instability.
A 1-D variant of the TraFiC4 code also predicts the instability and gets agreement with theory.
