Re: Problem with vary_element
Frank, The problem is that the name of the element starts with a digit. While this is legal in elegant, it causes problems when elegant attempts to create a parameter in the .fin file corresponding to the varied quantity. The reason is that SDDS forbids names that start with digits, because it cause...

Re: Combined magnet
Hisham, Unfortunately there's no element that combines all of those fields conveniently. There are two options: * Add two zero-length MULT elements on either side of the KQUSE element. Set ORDER=3 to get octupole field. * Use KQUAD, and specify the sextupole and octupole fields using the SYSTEMATIC_...

Re: gross n00b question: where are the examples?
Michael,
You're right, it isn't on the page linking the manual. I mistakenly thought it was.
Sorry for the confusion.

Michael,
You can find the examples file linked from the documentation and the software download web pages, not the manual itself. It's

Re: Twiss output in the absence of &track command
Michael, The setup/action command distinction is admittedly confusing and not well explained in the manual. An "action" command causes elegant to immediately perform a specific computation or set of computations. In contrast, a "setup" command tells elegant how to perform computations when it later ...

elegant2astra
Christopher Behrens pointed out that the elegant2astra script distributed with elegant also had some problems. I've fixed these and attach the new version here. Thanks to Christopher for bringing this to my attention and checking the new version. --Michael (Sorry I had to gzip the file, even though ...

Re: File becomes locked after initial run of Pelegant
Unfortunately, I'm unable to duplicate the problem. I ran Pelegant with your input files using a local drive on my desktop, as well as on a cluster using NFS. In both cases the run completed normally and created all the files.

Can you supply the wake_bc1.sdds file and any other required files so I can run this?

bug in astra2elegant
There is a bug in the astra2elegant script that will show up in particular for very long bunches. The bug results from not accounting for the fact that the output file from ASTRA is a snapshot of the beam at a fixed time rather than a record of particle coordinates crossing a fixed z plane. Attached...

Re: Ramping
Ray,
Glad to hear you got it working. By the way, here's a movie I made of a ramp from 200 MeV to 3 GeV
