Problem solved, thanks so much for the help.
I looked harder at my path and discovered a sneaky ~ in my .profile, where none should be.

Hi All, I am getting the same error. .profile contains export RPN_DEFNS=~/Applications/ELEGANT/defns.rpn export PATH=~/Applications/ELEGANT:$PATH and /usr/X11 points to /opt/X11.
