FFAG - Phoenix in the History of Accelerator R&D

Of all accelerator types the FFAG (Fixed Field Alternating Gradient) has had a most charming yet jinxed existence.

Born in the midst of a feuding Midwestern physics community, the FFAG is based on elegant mathematical principles and has tantalizingly far-reaching promises.  Its appeal was recurrently appreciated and construction was proposed many times over the decades, yet it was never built.  The principle and the potential of FFAG will be discussed relative to its setting in the history of R&D of accelerator science and technology during the past century.
