Alignment without Magnet Fiducials

Abstract:

The Swiss Light Source is a third generation synchrotron of about 290 m circumference. One of its main goals is to achieve maximum brightness. As a consequence, tight relative alignment tolerances are called for. Achieving these tolerances requires experienced personnel and is time consuming, hence becomes very expensive. To avoid these obstacles, a different route was taken. Girders and all components are designed and will be machined accurately, such that the mechanical assembly will create a perfectly aligned module. Subsequently, reference fixtures allow the placement of these modules in respect to the absolute framework.
