The Alignment Monitoring System for the Muon Spectrometer of the ATLAS Detector at the Large Hadron Collider

Abstract:

One of the central components of the ATLAS detector at the LHC is the stand-alone muon spectrometer operating in a toroidal magnetic field generated by superconducting air-core magnets. The high precision muon chambers have to be complemented by very accurate alignment monitoring systems in order to achieve a transverse momentum resolution of better than 8% up to Pt = 1 TeV/c. The required precision on the misalignment corrections makes it necessary to develop novel optical monitoring techniques as well as new alignment concepts. The alignment methods for the barrel and forward parts of the ATLAS muon spectrometer are described and results of their verification with dedicated test-stands presented.
