Considerations for the Measurement of Particle Accelerators with Laser Trackers

Abstract:

Laser tracker operators should understand tracker capabilities and specifications, as well as measurement techniques and practices, to optimize the use of laser trackers in the measurement of particle accelerators. This paper discusses the tracker capabilities that operators should be familiar with: absolute distance measurement (ADM), elevation measurement, and automatic temperature compensation. Also discussed are the origins of tracker specifications, such as uncertainty, accuracy and repeatability. This information gives insight into appropriate techniques and practices for making measurements. The paper includes examples relevant to particle accelerators.
