ICALEPCS'95

International Conference on Accelerator and Large Experimental Physics Control Systems

On Reaching the Conference Site

Chicago is served by two major airports: O'Hare International (ORD) and Midway (MDW). Those arriving from abroad will almost certainly disembark at O'Hare's International Terminal; domestic travelers can arrive at either airport; although O'Hare is more popular, flights to Midway are often less expensive. Each is about the same distance from the Swissôtel Chicago, 323 E. Wacker Drive. A rental car is not recommended as several modes of public transportation are available, and parking entails a considerable expense (Swissôtel Parking fee is $19.00/day plus tax.). The Registration Form asks for those arriving at O'Hare as to the scheduled time. We shall coordinate transportation to the hotel for the most popular periods; a subsequent (electronic) mailing to all registrants will present the details. The following information should make it easy to find the Swissôtel on your own:

Transportation from O'Hare Airport to the Swissôtel Chicago

By Continental Air Transport Bus

The Continental Air Transport bus leaves O'Hare every 5-10 minutes from 6:00 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. It can be boarded in the lower level baggage claim area of Terminal 1 at Door 1E, Terminal 2 at Door 2D, Terminal 3 at Door 3E and Terminal 5 (International) at Door 5D (Customs). The Continental agent at these locations will advise which bus to board for the Swissôtel. The agent at the international terminal (Terminal 5) must be notified first to divert a bus to that terminal. The cost per person is $14.75/one-way and $25.50/round trip.

By CTA Train (Subway/Elevated)

The CTA rate from O'Hare to downtown is $1.50. All CTA trains at O'Hare depart from Terminal 4 lower level. Exit the train at the Washington station. From this point it is recommended that a cab be taken the approximately one mile to the hotel.

By Taxi

The cost from O'Hare to downtown is $20 to $24 depending on traffic. This rate is only minimally higher for several passengers in one cab.

By Car

From the airport take I-90/94 East to the Ohio Street exit. Take the Ohio Street mini-expressway to its end after about one mile, and proceed on Ohio Street proper for about one mile further, to Wabash Avenue (first street after State Street). Turn right on Wabash Avenue, cross a bridge over the Chicago River, and make an immediate left onto Wacker Drive. Continue east on Wacker to the Swissôtel, 323 East Wacker Drive - immediately before the cul-de-sac at the end of this street. Note, Wacker Drive has three vertical levels at this location; you must be on the top one.

Transportation from Midway Airport to the Swissôtel Chicago

By Continental Bus

The Continental bus leaves Midway Airport every 15 minutes from 6:00 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. It can be boarded near the Southwest Airlines baggage claim area. The cost per person is $10.75/one-way or $19.00/round trip. Reservations are required for the return trip to Midway (1-800-654-7871).

By CTA Train (Subway/Elevated)

The CTA rate from Midway to downtown is $1.50. The CTA train at Midway is the Midway Orange Line. Exit the train (elevated at this point) at the State/Lake station. From this point it is recommended that a cab be taken the approximately six blocks to the hotel.

By Taxi

The cost from Midway to downtown is $18 to $22 depending on traffic. This rate is only minimally higher for several passengers in one cab.

Directions for Rental Car Travelers

The major exit from the airport is onto Cicero Avenue. Take Cicero North to I-55 (Stevenson Expressway). Go north on I-55 and stay on it until the terminus at Lake Shore Drive North. As you reach the downtown area, get into the right lane and exit at Randolph/Wacker. From the off ramp continue straight to the sign for Wacker Drive, and bear left as the sign instructs. Move to the right lane and take the ramp to Upper Wacker Drive. Make a U-turn (it is legal) at the first traffic light and pull into 323 East Wacker Drive, the Swissôtel Chicago.
